Abstract
A clinical observation was made on 34 cases of tetanus in adult who were treated at Busan University Hospital as in-patient from January 1966 to February 1973.
The results were as follow:
1. Sex distribution was a predominance of male showing the male to female ratio of about 3:1 with highest age incidence in the 2nd and 3rd decades.
2. There was the most common prevalence in April and May and no regular annual variation of incidence.
3. The predisposing wounds were on the lower extremity and as laceration lesion chiefly.
4. The incubation period was usually between 7 to 14 days and its duration was noted no direct relation to prognosis.
5. The onset time was the most frequent on 2 or 3 days and duration was related reversely mortality rate.
6. The prognosis was proportional to its clinical severity add reflex spasm suggested poor prognosis.
7. On the laboratory findings, leukocytosis was seen in 32.4% and diminishing of C02 combining power (below 20 mEq/L) in 57.9%. The latter finding was more remarkable in the expired cases than in the survived cases.
8. The mortality rate was 26. 4% and the main causes of death were respiratory spasm and heart failure.
